Pressestimmen
No-one is better placed than Fiennes to understand what Scott may have experienced or to appreciate the enormity of his achievement. A gripping tale of courage and adventure. (Daily Mail)A valuable corrective to the trend of Scott debunking ushered in by Roland Huntford...One by one, and with commendable attention to detail, Fiennes explodes the accumulated myths. The world will remember Scott and, to a lesser extent, Fiennes when the memory of the mean-spirited and misleading Huntford has long since melted away. (Justin Marozzi, Sunday Telegraph)Sir Ranulph Fiennes has done Captain Scott's memory some service...he has certainly written a more dispassionate and balanced account than Huntford ever set out to do (Simon Courtauld, Spectator)He is uniquely qualified...because only someone who has "man-hauled" across Antarctica can know what went on. Fiennes's own experiences certainly allow him to write vividly and with empathy of the hell that the men went through. He has valuable insights into the running of the Royal Geographical Society and the mounting of an expedition, and he does indeed right some wrongs. (The Sunday Times)

One of the Great Adventures of the 20th Century fascinatingly told. i highly recommend this Book for anyone Interessded in History
I admit to being naively lead astray by Roland Huntford, regarding the personal side of R. F. Scott because it happened to be the first book I read about the South Pole expeditions, The Last Place on Earth, which this author admits is very well written book, but then proceeds to undo the erroneous, misguided, and sometimes invented for effect, statements of R. Huntford. After his book I read The Worst Journey in th3e World, longish perhaps but an excellent read and a comprehensive look at the entire Expedition leading to the tragedy of Scott's summit team It had such a different take on Scott than Huntford had presented, and I realized Huntford purposely set out to bring forth every negative thing about Scott he could dig up, and, in captain Scott I really appreciate the author's taking apart of Huntford and his often completely unfounded claims. I was grateful to be relieved of my misconceptions about Scott, and this is a great read too, making me feel like I was there at the end, when months of excess physical output and worst of all having to live is such bitter cold, plus lack of food and fuel, and finally dehydration, combined towards an inevitable outcome. This author gives Scott's downsides clearly and does not dress up his topor or untidiness or moments of anger towards others, and, I think, estimates the real value of Scott's Expedition and the scientific work done, placing him in historical terms amongst the greatest explorers in history. I really came to admire Amundsen and still do, certainly enjoying his Northwest Passage Journals and the South Pole books a lot. The author here does dig up some dirt on the Norwegian, and gives a slightly negative tint, perhaps imitating his nemesis, Huntford. Finally, I think it is a shame that Roland Huntford became a 'classic" which contains fabrications that unfortunately continue to be cited by other authors as fact.
I am glad I read Mr Fiennes book. Sadly my opinion of Capt.Scott was previously solely based on the drama 'Last place on Earth'. Now I feel I can treat the memory of Capt.Scott more fairly. Thank you Mr Fiennes, your personal experience in polar expeditions was both scientifically engaging and endearingly emphatic throughout the book.
Great
"Captain Scott," Ranulph Fiennes' biography of the Antarctic explorer who died during the so-called "Race to the Pole," is an exhaustively researched, brilliant work. It's no page-turner; you have to keep your focus to learn about the life of the British Naval officer and explorer who died in a tent with two of his crew members after reaching the South Pole just days after Norwegian Roald Amundsen in 1912.There have been many books and some films about Scott, Amundsen and other polar expeditions from the end of the 19th and start of the 20th centuries, but this will be the definitive work on the late explorer's life.
This book gives a detailed account of both of Robert Falcon Scott's Antarctica explorations. Being a polar explorer himself. Fiennes is able to give insights into exactly what Scott and his expeditions experienced and endured. If you are looking for a book that attacks Scott and his legend this is not for you and Fiennes makes a very convincing argument against those authors who have attacked Scott. Instead, this book will allow you to see what made Scott a true hero of not only his era but for the generations that followed. Scott exemplified all that was good and heroic in pre- World War I Great Britain.
